Kiara’s brain ventricles are large and it is impossible to tell from MRI images alone if there is elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) in her brain. High ICPs may cause her vision to deteriorate more rapidly, so she and I spent Christmas in the hospital away from her daddy and brothers. Her neurosurgeon implanted an ICP monitor in her brain, which gave us good results that her brain was stable. While we could opt for a v/p shunt to control any pressure, we really didn’t want her to have an implant in her body that could be susceptible to failure or infection. Pro Tip: Months later she got a shunt anyway and it’s been fine.
